East Meets West

October 27th at 8:00 pm

Majid Derakhshani

Zohreh Jooya
Lien Haegemans
Alice Hendrix

Conductor Alice Hendrix presents a special music project which shall convey the message of tolerance and understanding of a multicultural and multireligious society

Part one:
Songs, based on poetry of the Persian Sufi mystics Molana Rumi, Hafiz and Sa’adi, composed by Madjid Derakhshani. The performers will be Zohreh Jooya and the Golestan ensemble featuring Ostad Madjid Derakhshani. These songs were published on the album “Music of the Persian Mystics”

Part two:
STABAT MATER with the Limburg Symphonic Orchestra, Zohreh Jooya (soprano), Lien Haegemans (mezzo soprano), Ostad Majid Derakhshani and the Golestan Ensemble.

STABAT MATER’s story, by the contemporary composer Karl Jenkins is based on the suffering of the holy mother Mary during Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. Jenkins gave STABAT MATER a modern and multicultural character, using Latin and different oriental languages and oriental instruments like the ney, daf and darabuca. Besides the classical text of the STABAT MATER, Jenkins uses lines of the Epic of Gilgamesh the world’s oldest written story from the ancient Babylonian civilisation, recorded on clay tablets in the 7th century BCE.

One of the highlights is the song “Now my life is only weeping” by Molana Rumi, for whom grief was a central experience of his personal history. He had an intense relationship with Shams al-Din Tabrizi his spiritual mentor whose apparent murder turned Rumi into a poet and mystic who sought consolation in the Divine.

In short:
When: October 27th at 8:00 pm
Where: Stadsschouwburg Sittard , Mgr. Claessensstraat 2, 6131 AJ Sittard
Who: -Golestan Ensemble with Zohreh Jooya and Majid Derakhshani
